MFD responds to residential garage fire on Cooper Lane
Marshalltown homeowners have been temporarily displaced from their residence after a garage fire at 2905 Cooper Lane on Monday afternoon.
According to a press release from the Marshalltown Fire Department (MFD), the department was dispatched at around 4:30 p.m. Monday. The MFD received word from dispatch that the fire was in the garage of the residence and the homeowner was attempting to suppress the fire with a fire extinguisher.
Upon the arrival of firefighters, a working fire was found in the attached garage.
“Firefighters deployed two attack lines and suppressed the majority of fire in the garage. Firefighters transitioned into the living area of the house to check for extension and ventilate the living space. No fire extended from the garage into the house or the attic space,” the release reads.
The fire was caused by a mechanical malfunction in the engine compartment of the homeowner’s vehicle, discovered after returning home from a trip to the supermarket, and the homeowners are temporarily displaced due to smoke damage. Firefighters were at the scene for approximately an hour and received assistance from the Marshalltown Police Department (MPD) at the scene.
