A packed house

August 22, 2011 - Pam Rodgers
An estimated 14,000 people came to The Band Perry’s free concert at the Iowa State Fair last week, and I was one of them. Being a country fan, I was very excited that The Band Perry was going to be at the State Fair and I was even more excited when I found out it was a free concert. Apparently I wasn’t alone.

For those who don’t know, The Band Perry is a new country group that is made up of three siblings, a sister and two brothers. Kimberly, the oldest, plays the guitar and sings lead vocal, Reid is the middle child and plays bass guitar and sings back up and Neil is the youngest and plays the mandolin and also sings backup vocals. They are most popular for the No. 1 smash hit, “If I Die Young.”

At the fair, they played for about hour and 15 minutes straight, which is good considering they only have one album. They sang almost everything on their CD plus some other original songs that they haven’t recorded. It was a very entertaining performance. They shared their passion for state fairs, and the food you can get there. If you listen to their CD, fairs are a popular mention in multiple songs so it was fun learning the reasoning behind it.

The best part of the performance is when they sang their two most popular songs back to back “If I Die You” and “You Lie.” It was toward the end and the rest of the show built up to that moment perfectly. The crowd went crazy as Kimberly introduced “If I Die Young.” It was great as the entire audience joined her in singing the song. She even dropped out of the final verse and let the crowd serenade her with the lyrics she wrote. “You Lie” was similar in audience participation. It was great to fill the entire amphitheater with the music.

I attended the concert with my sister. In our infinite wisdom, or lack thereof, we both forgot our cameras so we only have questionable quality pictures and video from our smartphones. But even without the ready memento of the performance, I’ll never forget being apart of it. I was a fan before going to the concert and I left an even bigger fan of their music. I will have to see them again.

P.S. Luckily, others were thinking ahead and got video of The Band Perry. Here is someone else’s video of “If I Die Young.” I thank them for posting it to YouTube.
