Killer Elite was a good action flick

September 29, 2011 - Pam Rodgers
The other night, my family and I decided to hit the theater and end the box office drought that we have been experiencing throughout September. We decided the new Jason Statham, Clive Owen and Robert DeNiro action thriller Killer Elite. At the end of the film, it was easy for me to conclude that it was a really good movie, even though it can’t be categorized as the best movie I have ever seen (actually it’s not even close but I still enjoyed it a lot).

It was everything I expected it to be. It was two hours of Statham and his crew going in and out of missions ... killing people (hence the title). OK, so there’s a little bit more to the plot than that but that’s about the gist.

Statham’s character, Danny, left the life at the beginning of the movie. A year into his “retirement” his mentor, Hunter (played by DeNiro), was captured and used against him to take one final mission to get his friend free. He is ordered by a Sheik to avenge the deaths of his sons by killing former British Special Forces members.

Owen’s character, Spike, is a former member of the British SAS (though not on the hit list) tries to stop Statham and his crew from killing his former comrades. And now the conflict is fully in place! The movie based on the 1991 book “The Feather Men” by Sir Ranulph Fiennes for whatever that’s worth.

OK, confession time. Chuck’s leading lady (the TV show not some random guy named Chuck), Yvonne Strahovski, is also in the movie. She gets to use her native Aussie accent as she plays Anne, Statham’s girlfriend who he met in his year off. While she had a small role compared to everyone else, it was great to see her get to show off her skills as someone other than the kick-butt spy, Sarah Walker. The fact that she was in the film may have been a contributing factor to me agreeing to go to the film.*

Overall, Killer Elite was a good movie. For those who love a good action flick, I suggest you go and see it for yourself.

*For those unfamiliar with my blog, Chuck is my favorite show on NBC. It returns for its fifth and final season at 7 p.m. Oct. 21.
