My mom can text
January 23, 2012 - Andrew Potter
It came out of nowhere and I didn’t know how to take it.
Last week I found out my mom.... can text.
It surprised me when it came through my phone. I had never texted her before and we never talked about her ability to text. It just seems kind of weird for someone in their mid-60s to text. I’m not saying they can’t, but they usually resort to old fashioned phone calls. Heck, I didn’t even start regularly texting until a couple of years ago, so I’m in danger of my mother surpassing me and being more hip than me.
Then there is the other end of the spectrum. Teens who know how to text and avoid personal calls like the plague. One time I contacted a teen for a story I wanted to do with him. Instead of returning the voice mail I left I got a text saying “Who is this.” Twenty-two texts later and we got the interview set up.
Now wouldn’t a 15-second phone call have worked better?
