Home runs and a headache

May 9, 2012 - Pam Rodgers
This past weekend, my family and I traveled to Kansas City to see the Yankees play the Royals. We are all big fans of the Bronx Bombers so it is always a fun time to go see them play when they are close to Iowa. Kansas City is one of my favorite ballparks to go to, so it worked out perfectly. We went to the games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and it was a blast.

On Friday and Sunday, the Yankees played really well. We got to see Derek Jeter hit a home run Friday, which something you don’t always get to see from the Yankee Captain. He is a fantastic hitter but not really a “home run guy.” Mark Teixeira also hit a home run in the game and it was an exciting 6 to 2 victory.

Sunday brought more home runs for the fans. Robinson Cano hit a Grand Slam. Nick Swisher hit a solo shot in his first game back from a hamstring injury. And A-Rod rounded out the offense with three-run blast. Phil Hughes pitched really well, considering the rocky start he’s had this year. The Yankees won 10 to 3 and looked more like the ball club they are supposed to be.

The day I would like to forget is Saturday. The Yankees lost 5 to 1. The only run scored was on a Russell Martin home run, which was the only highlight of the game, for New York fans at least. The Yankees played awful. The couldn’t hit to save their lives and the new Japanese pitcher, Hiroki Kuroda didn’t do very well. In short, It wasn’t a very good game to watch. To top it off, it was hot and muggy.

But, I still had fun on the trip. I’m just glad the bad game wasn’t on Sunday. It would have been a big downer to end the vacation. My family has been going to Yankee games for a long time (before I was born). An with the exception of last year, I have been to at least one game for the last 21 years. It’s a wonderful family tradition, and I’m so glad I got to go this year.

I’m already looking forward to next year’s trip!
