Ankeny's Joel Lanning picks Cyclones over Nebraska

August 12, 2012 - Andy Heintz
Marshalltown High School will get a chance to play the latest Iowa State Cyclone on Friday when the Bobcats travel to Ankeny to take on the Hawks in the high school football season opener.

Ankeny QB Joel Lanning committed to the Cyclones on Sunday night, according to the Des Moines Register. Lanning picked the Cyclones over Nebraska, saying he just felt like it was the better place for him.

Lanning guided the Hawks to an 11-2 record last year, throwing for 1,733 yards and 18 scores. He also rushed for 636 yards and added five rushing TDs. Ankeny and Lanning will begin the season as the No. 3 ranked team in Class 4A in the Des Moines Register's preseason rankings.

Lanning is the 14th commitment in Iowa State's 2013 class.

Marshalltown and Ankeny will kick off the season at 7:30 p.m. from Ankeny. The Bobcats also have a pretty good QB in Blake Gimbel, who set a new state single season passing yards record last year and also had 39 touchdown passes.
