Two area teams make cut in Register's preseason rankings

August 12, 2012 - Andy Heintz
Two football teams from the Times-Republican coverage area made the cut in the annual preseason rankings put out by the Des Moines Register this weekend.

Both area teams were ranked No. 5 in their respective classes. In Class 2A, West Marshall was given a No. 5 ranking, while North Tama was at No. 5 in Class A.

The Register placed defending Class 3A champion at the top of the Class 2A rankings followed by Boyden Hull/Rock Valley, Mediapolis and Spirit Lake. In Class A, the top four ahead of North Tama included top-ranked West Lyon, West Hancock, Madrid and Lone Tree.

Also, several of our area teams will play other teams ranked in the polls this season.

The Marshalltown Bobcats will play No. 3 Ankeny in Week 0 on Friday night in Ankeny and also will face Class 4A No. 5 Dowling Catholic in the final regular season game of the year. Other CIML teams to make the cut included top-ranked and defending champion West Des Moines Valley as well as No. 9 SE Polk and No. 10 Johnston. The Bobcats also will face Class 3A No. 3 Pella in Week 1.

AGWSR head coach Skip Eckhardt knew that he would have some ranked teams in his district this season and preseason polls reflect that as district favorites West Hancock and Mason City Newman Catholic start the season, No. 2 and No. 9, respectively.

In 8-player, both Meskwaki Settlement School and Colo-Nesco will have the tough task of facing No. 2 Melcher-Dallas. Colo-Nesco also will face No. 3 Murray and No. 5 Adair-Casey.

The No. 1 teams in each class are as follows: West Des Moines Valley, Decorah, Union (LaPorte City), Iowa City Regina, West Lyon and Clarksville.

For some of the area teams, the football season begins this Friday. The rest of the area squads will crack the pads with their first opponents on Friday, Aug. 24.
