Brees in process of turning around MCC volleyball

February 1, 2013 - Andy Heintz
The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team struggled with depth and overall talent in Chris Brees' first season.

But with a full offseason of recruiting, it is clear that Brees is taking the proper steps and getting the players he needs to make the Tigers formiddable.

He started with a couple area kids in Marshalltown's Miranda Smith and BCLUW's Reeba Box. Both players were a bit under the radar this season. Smith was a hidden gem caught behind Eisha Oden and Lauren Mazour. Box has battled a few shoulder injuries and is currently rehabbing a torn labrum. Having seen these girls play, it is clear to me that both will make impacts for MCC in the future.

Brees also got a commitment from West Des Moines Valley hitter Meghann Cole and she is expected to sign to Wednesday at MCC. He also had a commitment from Ankeny setter Sam Hinrichs and got a visit from Newton setter Katelyn Camp a few Saturdays ago. Both Cole and Hinrichs play on Brees' club team. Both are familiar with him. Both want to play for him for at least two more years.

Another option is Oden, the powerful, free swinging hitter for Marshalltown. Oden may want to play basketball, too, as it is believed that she has that opportunity at MCC with Brees and head women's basketball coach Alison Lacey. Kirkwood Community College offered Oden a volleyball scholarship, but the basketball coach was not on board.

That could favor the Tigers as Oden will likely want to play both or will ultimately choose basketball over volleyball.

Any key to next years season is what Mady Van Metre decides to do. She is a sophomore on the basketball team but just a freshman as far as volleyball is concerned. She led the nation last year in kills but is at MCC because of basketball, according to Brees. He said they have a scholarship for her if she wants it. But that will decide on what happens with basketball.

Brees is making steps in the right direction. Check back for more scholarship signature updates.
