Bobcat duo headed down JUCO football road
May 4, 2013 - Andy Heintz
I had the chance to catch up with Marshalltown seniors Tad Steffensen and Brandon Pettigrew at the Drake Relays.
It had been reported that Steffensen was going to play football at Iowa Western and Pettigrew was headed to Ellsworth to play the same sport. Both guys confirmed that to me at Drake Stadium.
Steffensen said he knew for a long time that he was headed to Iowa Western. His ultimate plan is to head to Council Bluffs for one, maybe two, years and then head north to join his brother Ty and MHS quarterback Blake Gimbel at Southwest Minnesota State.
"I couldn't say no to Iowa Western though, I love Iowa Western," Steffensen said.
The Reivers of course are the defending national champions and Steffensen was excited to have the chance to play for another national title.
Pettigrew's path also may end up at Southwest Minnesota State. He would like to play at Ellsworth for two years and then transfer to SW Minnesota State if it will have him.
Southwest Minnesota State has become a pipeline of sorts for the Bobcats.
Gimbel will play there this coming year and Ty Steffensen redshirted this past season. Also, former Bobcat QB Tyler Peschong just finished his starting quarterback run there this past season, earning all conference honors along the way.
The biggest hurdle for Tad Steffensen right now may be with the knee injury he suffered during football season.
"It’s getting better each day. I can’t complain about it," he said. "You just have to go day by day. My calf is starting to bruise up now, too. I am a little slower but it takes time. I want to be faster and hopefully I will be healthy by the end of the year. It is a work in progress."
