Watching the derby with my daughter

May 7, 2013 - Bennet Goldstein

This was the first year that I made an attempt to teach our 4-year-old daughter about the Kentucky Derby. I think she learned much about the sport after she quit calling it the “Flying Derby,” which I think she picked up from one of her princess shows. One other amusing moment was when the winning trainer Shug McGaughey was spotlighted and they said on TV that he was 62 years old. “62 years old!” my daughter shouted in amazement as it seemed she didn’t know people lived that long. I had her pick out a few horses to root for during the race and it’s no wonder that Charming Kitten was one of them. None of the horses she picked won although she tried to convince me after the race that Orb was one of the ones she picked. Overall, she did get a kick out of seeing the different horses, especially the different things they were wearing prior to the event.
