It's time to do some shopping around

June 14, 2013 - Andy Heintz
No, I am leaving the T-R. I love my job and am finally getting acclimated to the coaches and players in the area.

But I definitely am looking forward to shopping around for a new workout facility.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Aspen Athletic Clubs as far as the facility itself. The five gyms they have in the Des Moines area are all top notch.

My issue right now is money. With a 6 month old baby controlling the wallets right now, it just makes sense to make sure we are getting the best possible price in town. I am looking for a less expensive that doesn't sacrifice equipment I want to use.

The biggest "Have to have" that I am looking for is a decent array of weights -- both free and machine. I am a runner these days so working treadmills and many to choose from is a plus. No, it is a must. I also want access to free spinning classes, large locker room facilities and free towel service. Aspen charges 50 cents per towel if you don't pay for towel service. I never understood why gyms just don't allow their members to use towels. Especially the small sweat towels that would help keep the equipment nice.

I would love to be able to swim and play basketball once in awhile but those are two things that I am likely to sacrifice moving forward.

A 24-hour facility may be the best option for me and my crazy schedule right now but it won't make or break the deal.

I have been a member of more gyms in the Des Moines area than I have fingers. And that list may get larger in the coming weeks. It may remain the same too. We'll just have to wait and see.
