MHS softball gets a chance at redemption in playoffs
June 24, 2013 - Andy Heintz
When the softball playoff pairings were released today, I couldn't help but chuckle at the draw that Marshalltown was given.
The Bobcats will play two teams that took controversial wins back home with them earlier this year in Marshalltown.
The first-round matchup will be against Mason City on the Mohawks' home turf. The Bobcats beat Mason City by the 10-run rule in the first game of a doubleheader last week but then lost the final game 10-4. Before the Mohawks pulled away, two calls went against the Bobcats that the Marshalltown fans, players and coaches felt took the game away from the Bobcats.
Whether or not the calls made were right, the Bobcats can now get redemption -- after two playing two more regular season games in Mason City -- on Thursday, July 11, at 7 p.m.
A potential second-round game could see Marshalltown playing at West Des Moines Valley. The Bobcats lost two close games to the No. 8 Tigers at the MHS diamond earlier this month an e second one ended in controversy with a close play at first going against the Bobcats. The out call prevented the Bobcats from tying the game in the bottom of the seventh and the Tigers prevailed.
Bobcat redemption in that game could come in West Des Moines on Saturday. July 13, if MHS can get by Mason City.
Another doubleheader to keep an eye on is the home meeting against Southeast Polk on Wednesday. The Rams are on the other side of the bracket and would face MHS in the regional title game if the Bobcats can advance that far.
