MHS baseball team opens substate play at Cedar Falls
July 2, 2013 - Troy Hyde
The postseason baseball pairings were released for Class 4A and 3A on Tuesday and the Marshalltown baseball team will be forced to play all of its substate games away from the MHS diamond.
The first-round games are scheduled for July 19 at 7 p.m. and fourth-seeded Marshalltown (14-13) will travel to third-seeded Cedar Falls (18-9) for its opener.
The other Class 4A Substate 3 games include top-seeded Cedar Rapids Xavier (19-11) host Waterloo East (2-22) and second-seeded Cedar Rapids Prairie (18-10) taking on Waterloo West at home. Those games also will be at 7 p.m. on July 19.
South Tama County (17-7) also got its district and substate breakdown. The Trojans also will play on the road as they head to Williamsburg to take on Clear Creek-Amana in their opener at 5 p.m. on July 19. Williamsburg takes on Center Point-Urbana later that night on the same field beginning at 7 p.m. South Tama is the only team with a record better than .500 in the district.
Those two winners will play in the Class 3A Substate 5 District 10 final on July 22 and the substate final will be in Benton on July 24. Teams in District 9 who could see the Trojans in the substate final -- if they get that far -- include Grinnell, Vinton-Shellsburg, Benton and Union-LaPorte City.
