East Coast bound

July 3, 2013 - Pam Rodgers

June seemed to fly by and so did this first week of July. As short as it seemed, that means one exciting thing to me. My trip to New York begins Friday!

I have been looking forward to this trip ever since we ordered our Yankees tickets in April. I have been equally excited about the road trip to New York. It has been awhile since our family took a road trip like this with everyone present. For the past few years, I have flown to our destination. Flying is great but some of my favorite trip memories are from the family road trips.

When we were kids, my brother, sister and I would come up with clever ways to keep ourselves entertained in the back of the van. The three of us had a deck of cards, maybe a notebook and pencil, but we had hours of fun with so little. We didn’t have iPods or portable DVD players to keep us busy. Reading was always something that was required in school, so I didn’t even read for pleasure until I was in high school (sad but true).

For this year’s road trip, entertainment has definitely become more of an individual thing. I have my iPhone (which can do almost anything) and our new van has a DVD player so I packed plenty of DVDs. I brought at least six books with me, and I’ll have a pillow for more comfortable car napping. The only thing I won’t have is my laptop, but even without that I should be set.

Yet with all the options, I can’t help but wonder if the three of us could come up with something fun to do and not use all of our gadgets. You know, the way we did when we were kids and very easily entertained. I doubt we ever do those things again, but I’ll always love those memories. Who knows, maybe we’ll finally have that family sing-a-long I always wanted ... then again maybe not. ;)
