Leadership Group picks teams for Blue-White Classic

August 22, 2013 - Andy Heintz
The teams are picked. The smack talk has commenced.

The nine members of the Marshalltown football team's Leadership Group met after practice with three Bobcat coaches on Tuesday night and selected their teams for Friday's Blue-White Classic at Leonard Cole Field.

Here is how the rosters will look for the intrasquad scrimmage, which will start at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The night kicks off at 5:30 as new Activities Director Craig Huegel will introduce the Roundhouse Falls Sports Kickoff.

The Blue-White Classic will feature the Bobcat cheerleaders, the Marshalltown High School band, a P.A. Announcer and there will be score kept. Concession stands also will be open and a canned food item will be charged for admission.

I was in the room for the draft that took place Tuesday. Here is a rundown of how the teams will look. The Marshalltown coach Aaron Shipley did say the coaching staff reserves the right to adjust the teams during the game to make game more competitive or to work on certain situations.

My view

The Blue definitely has the advantage in skill positions with Diveney at QB and Kluver, Thimesch and Tapia at wide receiver. Espinoza came to camp late but possesses a lot of speed and could factor into a role at some point.

The Blue defense also features Van Staalduine, Himes and Severson at LB as well predicted starters Lovin, Paone and Rebik in the secondary.

The White squad has the advantage at running back with Joe Rebik and it also drafted three offensive linemen who will be starters to start the season in Dolezal, Devine and Rembert.

Derek Mann leads the defense along with Edel at linebacker and Overstake on the defensive line.

Thing to watch

-- The change to the 3-4 defense is something to check out. Shipley feels like the roster this year has a lot more linebackers to make the change successful. The change could be shaky early as the players adjust to a completely new system.

-- Diveney is easily the fastest kid on the team. Unfortunately with Austin Sowers out with concussion, and Austin Kluver playing wide receiver, fans won't get to see the three-way battle for the varsity QB take shape. Instead, they may as well enjoy Diveney, who could be fun to watch this year.

-- New coaching staffs always put in their own little wrinkles. Shipley said there will be things that are similar to the previous years under Holdiman but also said new things will be put in place. The key is to find where those wrinkles are, which is something to keep an eye on.
