Life amongst the Hawks

September 15, 2013 - Wes Burns
Yesterday (Sunday) was the annual Cy-Hawk game. For those of you amongst my widespread fans in the international community the Cy-Hawk game is the yearly game between the renowned Iowa State University and that other college famous for all the drunk people and the world class hospital, the University of Iowa. Now, the T-R offices are populated with people that, on any other day of the year, are a perfectly agreeable lot ... until it turns into Cy-Hawk time. Suddenly the office becomes the home of Hawkeye cups, pictures, and t-shirts. And among all the black and gold, there I sit, Iowa State University graduate, class of 2006. It can be problematic. I've never been that big of a Cyclone booster; my school spirit usually stopped after the end of tailgating. But surrounded by all this Hawkeye nonsense it does spur some longstanding aggression towards the denizens of the IAC. Then ISU lost. So, I can say I'm not looking forward to work on Tuesday. I'm sure most of the post-win fervor will have blown over by then, and in the cold light of day Cyclone fans and Hawkeye fans can get together and agree on the one fact that neither team wants to say, but we all know is confusingly true: The Panthers are Iowa's best football team. Wow, it just feels weird to say.
