Returning to the Land of Oz

November 6, 2013 - Pam Rodgers

After seeing “Wicked” two years ago, I swore that if the musical returned to Des Moines I would go again.

I made good on my promise the first weekend it was in town.

The musical was as entertaining as I remembered it was. The Land of Oz will always have a special place in my heart, fictitious though it may be. I watched “The Wizard of Oz,” countless times as I grew up and now own it on DVD and Blu-ray.

As for last Saturday’s performance, I couldn’t help but compare the two companies who I saw in action. Now I may be partial to my first experience, but I felt the two leads weren’t measuring up to the women who brought Glinda and Elphaba to life two years ago.

There wasn’t anything really wrong with the performance. Both had excellent singing voices and hit all of the important notes. They played the characters as they should have been so that wasn’t really the issue. It was a few little things that the previous actresses added that these actresses didn’t. I discussed it with my sister during intermission, and she had the same views.

After saying it out loud, I was a little mad at myself for spending more time comparing and less time just enjoying the story and music that I had come to love. The self-scolding must have done the trick because I enjoyed the second act more than the first. Don’t get me wrong, the first act was entertaining, but I got in my own way of being totally enthralled.

“Wicked” will be in Des Moines through this Sunday. If you have a chance, I’d recommend you go see it. The “Untold Story of the Witches of Oz” is fabulous to behold.
