Furry friend, fierce finder

Earlier this week I had the honor to be in the same room with a woman who has so much passion for her job and a dog who has done more than just be a man’s best friend. Sgt. Melinda Ruopp, Awol, her K9 and the other officers along side with their K9s, seized more than one million dollars worth of drugs and cash. I know it’s old news now, but it’s still an amazing story. The marijuana sniffing mutts help the officers simply by using their nose, it’s fascinating. I am very grateful for the K9 program the Marshalltown Police Department has. What is also amazing is the supportive community who helped fund it. With well-trained, smart dogs and passionate officers, our community is getting safer day by day. I wish Awol a happy retirement and many belly rubs for all his hard work.
