The hustle to survive

January 22, 2014 - Pam Rodgers

It has been ages since I have blogged about my selections at the movie theater. At the end of the year, I found myself going to several new releases, but never found time to share a few thoughts on this blog about them.

Instead of going back and rehashing three months of movies, I’d like to start fresh with my choices so far in 2014. The two movies I have seen are nothing like each other — “American Hustle” and “Lone Survivor.” To try to compare the two would be like trying to find similarities between a stray cat and disco night club. It can be done, but it’s not likely.

Alas, I enjoyed both of them for different reasons.

I can see why “American Hustle” is getting love in the this year’s award season. It has an all star cast that would make any movie worth watching. Like most David O. Russell movies, it has a uniqueness to it that can’t be fully described. There is something off about each character, but that is what makes it so fun to watch. I wouldn’t call “American Hustle” my favorite movie ever, but I am glad that I saw it.

“Lone Survivor” on the other hand is probably a movie I will watch once, maybe twice. It’s not that the movie was bad nor was I unhappy that I saw it. In fact, the movie is really good. The story is very powerful. The final outcome is no surprise, but how it comes about isn’t at all what I expected. I could have looked it up. The story is out there for the public to read, but not knowing made the two-hour movie worth it.

So the year started with an off-beat dramatic comedy and a true-story military drama. Now all I need is an animated feature or a romcom, and I’ve got my basis covered. Of course, that new “Jack Ryan” movie looks decent, but an action movie doesn’t fit my needs. Decisions, decisions. Guess I have some movie times to look up, excuse me...
