The windy region
January 29, 2014 - Pam Rodgers
“I just blew in from the Windy City.”
Have you ever heard that song from “Calamity Jane?” It’s classic musical. It stars Doris Day as Calamity Jane and Howard Keel as Wild Bill Hickok. It’s a fun movie to watch, if you like that genre. I only bring it up because that particular song has been stuck in my head for the past few days and for good reason. The wind this winter has been terrible.
I am not alone when I say I am very ready for spring to arrive. Even the people who love winter and snow have to be fed up with these arctic conditions. I am tired of having to wrap my whole body up to protect myself every time I step outside. Today is a bit warmer, but weather forecasts already show that it's not around for long. I can remember cold winters, but this winter seems to have taken it to extremes. I don’t think we have had a calm week since the year began.
If we must have wind, hopefully it will start blowing in some warmer weather before we get to June. At least when the song pops into my head at that point, it is a more enjoyable occurrence.
So as I whisper the words of “Windy City” and walk quickly to a warm building, I consider the need to expand Chicago’s nickname to include the whole region. However, “The Windy Midwest” just doesn’t have quite the same ring to it. I guess Chicago can keep the nickname, and it take back the wind too.
