Lots of change in this week's Associated Press poll

February 3, 2014 - Troy Hyde
Here is a look at how I voted in this week's Iowa boy's high school basketball Associated Press poll. ...

Class 4A

1. Dubuque Senior

2. Iowa City West

3. Bettendorf

4. North Scott

5. Waukee

6. Johnston

7. Southeast Polk

8. Des Moines North

9. Ankeny Centennial

10. Cedar Rapids Kennedy

My Notes: It was a crazy week in Class 4A this week. Six teams in the most recent poll lost. That list included top-ranked Dubuque Senior, second-ranked Bettendorf, third-ranked Southeast Polk, sixth-ranked Des Moines North, 10th-ranked Johnston and eighth-ranked Ankeny Centennial. I honestly believe that any team in my top 10 can make a deep run at the state tournament. The team I have seen is Johnston. The Dragons are long and athletic and were undefeated with Jay Knuth in the lineup until Urbandale took the air out of the ball and won 38-37. Every team in 4A now has at least one loss.

Class 3A

1. Clear Lake

2. Dubuque Wahlert

3. Central Clinton

4. Dallas Center-Grimes

5. Waverly-Shell Rock

6. Fort Madison

7. Harlan

8. Western Dubuque

9. Pella

10. Solon

My Notes: Harlan, Western Dubuque, Pella and Solon all lost this week, which forced me to shift those teams to the bottom portion of my rankings. I think Clear Lake and Dubuque Wahlert are clearly the best two teams but Central Clinton is making an impressive push lately to me. Waverly-Shell Rock also looks like it has found its stride of late. Clear Lake is the lone unbeaten in this class and Fort Madison is the lone squad with just one loss.

Class 2A

1. Western Christian

2. New Hampton

3. West Fork

4. Cascade

5. Treynor

6. Des Moines Christian

7. Carroll Kuemper Catholic

8. Iowa City Regina

9. IKM-Manning

10. Dike-New Hartford

My Notes: Western Christian had another big win this week, beating former ranked Class 3A Sioux City Bishop Heelan by double-digits. The Wolfpack are clearly No. 1 and everyone else is playing for second at this point. For now, my No. 2 is once again New Hampton. Those two squads are the only 2A teams which are unbeaten, but five teams have just one loss. Iowa City Regina lost for the first time last week, while Sioux Center and Carroll Keumper Catholic also dropped a game this week. New to my rankings this is week is Dike-New Hartford at No. 10.

Class 1A

1. LeMars Gehlen Catholic

2. Newell-Fonda

3. Lamoni

4. Keota

5. Nodaway Valley

6. West Lyon

7. Meskwaki Settlement School

8. Gladbrook-Reinbeck

9. Dunkerton

10. Ar-We-Va

My Notes: The most unbeatens and one-loss teams are in Class 1A. Four teams still have yet to lose and another six have just one loss. That doesn't include Meskwaki Settlement School, which has lost only to GMG on the court but also has another loss by forfeit against Colo-NESCO. My top five this week remained the same. I did include Gladbrook-Reinbeck to the poll again. The Rebels have looked great of late, winning seven in a row including wins over AGWSR and West Marshall. G-R also scored 103 points North Tama on Saturday. Meskwaki gets tested in the coming weeks with road games at Colo-NESCO and AGWSR.
