Tiger baseball team earns third straight split

KINSTON, N.C. – Earning a split in its third straight series, the Marshalltown Community College baseball team dropped the opener to Lenoir Community College only to bounce back in the nightcap to even its season record to 3-3 on the year.
The Tigers managed just three hits in the opener and lost 4-1 but rebounded with a six-run fifth inning in the second game and won 8-2.
Aneudis Sandoval went 4-for-4 in the win with two runs, a run and a stolen base, while Ty Russell had two hits, a run and a walk and Bennett Mann chipped in one hit, two runs, an RBI and a walk in the victory. Parker Rolfes also had two hits and two runs as the Tigers collected 12 hits in all. Richard England won his first collegiate game on the mound, allowing two earned runs in four innings with two strikeouts. Kyle Herrick also threw three innings and allowed no runs on four hits and one strikeout.
The Tigers had three hits and two errors in the opener as Lenoir (1-4) scored all four of its runs in the sixth frame. Daryl Blaskovich had one hit and one run, while Sandoval added one hit and one RBI. Alex McCune threw five innings and allowed two runs on six hits with three strikeouts but took the loss.
The split Monday was the Tigers third straight to start the year. MCC also took 1-of-2 against Roane State on Feb. 7 and then went 1-1 again against Roane State on Feb. 8.
The four games scheduled to be played against Surry Curry Community College on Saturday and Sunday and were all postponed due to inclement weather.
MCC opens season with four-game split of Roane State
HARRIMAN, Tenn. -- The Tigers lost to Roane State in the opener and the finale. MCC dropped a 5-2 decision in the opener but committed six errors in the field and had just five hits at the plate – two of which came from Blaskovich.
The finale resulted in a 5-4 loss and the defense once again struggled with four more errors. Pedro Lopez had two of the Tigers’ six hits, while Blaskovich went 1-for-2 with a double, a run, an RBI and two walks. One of Lopez’s hits was a double he also scored a run. Russell had one hit but knocked in three runs as well.
The two middle games against Roane resulted in 7-6 and 5-1 wins.
The first win came in eight innings as each team combined to commit eight errors and record 20 hits. Sandoval had two hits and a walk to lead the Tigers at the plate. Six of MCC’s seven runs were scored in the fourth inning.
Landon Bryan went 4-for-4 at the dish for Roane State, which lost despite collecting 13 hits. The 5-1 win for MCC that started Feb. 8 included a five-run sixth inning. The Tigers collected five hits and committed three errors in the victory. Five different Tigers got a hit but Russell added two RBIs to lead the way.
Schyler Kane earned the win on the mound, allowing no earned runs and no hits in 2 2/3 innings. Danny Smith surrendered two hits and three walks while fanning three in his 3 1/3 innings. Roane State managed just two hits at the plate in the loss.
