A special sandwich, a good vibe

April 4, 2014 - Brett Van Waus
When I asked for a menu people sitting at the bar looked at me. When I asked what a Maid-Rite is, they chuckled. Tuesday was my first time at the staple of Marshalltown, Taylor’s Maid-Rite. I ordered a Maid-Rite with cheese and a small chocolate shake, no chips. I sat at the bar and service was super fast. My small chocolate shake, which turned out to be enormous, was delivered fast with a spoon. The shake wasn’t that thick. The sandwich arrived wrapped like any other fast food restaurant. As I was eating and meat fell out, I realized the spoon wasn’t for the shake. My lunch was tasty but something I wouldn’t order every day. The food wasn't the highlight of my lunch. When I was waiting to pay I over heard other people’s orders. “Mustard. Pickles. Onions. Plain chips and a chocolate shake made with vanilla ice cream.” “Mustard.” “Onions.” It was like I was watching the travel channel, no joke. Listening to other people order was the highlight of my lunch break. People were so confident in their orders and apparently regulars. I also just learned Taylor's Maid-Rite is the old restaurant in Marshalltown. Those of you who have not ate at this establishment, I recommend it, after all, it's a gem in the community.
