Area athletes ready themselves for annual Drake Relays.

April 19, 2014 - Troy Hyde
The annual Drake Relays will kick off next week at Drake Stadium, as well as some other locations in West Des Moines and Waukee.

There will be several area athletes competing in high school events at the prestigious event. Based on the results I have found on quikstats.com, here is a look at what we can expect to see from the athletes you may go to school with.

BOYS

Two runners will take part in two events this week.

Marshalltown’s Imad Amenzou has been impressive so far this season and he will run in the 3,200-meter run on Thursday evening and then will return to the blue oval on Saturday afternoon. Amenzou comes into the weekend with the ninth-best two-mile time and the 11th best mile.

The other area athlete who should be in two events at the Relays is South Tama County sprinter Dylan Kalinay. Kalinay could be hitting the blue oval at least twice on Friday. He’ll run in the 110-meter high hurdles at 8 a.m., while the 100 dash is at 8:46. Kalinay, who was a part of the Trojans’ state championship 4x100 relay team last year, enters the fourth-best time in the hurdles and the 16th best 100-meter time.

Aside from West Marshall likely taking part in the 4x100 relay, the rest of the male athletes who could be in the Drake Relays will do so in field events.

The high jump could feature two area athletes in both the high school boys and high school girls division. GMG’s Brock Fisher and Marshalltown’s Brady Arment are both among a group of jumpers who are tied for 14th overall. If they qualify, those two will compete at 9:45 a.m. Friday.

AGWSR’s Clay Meinders is one of the best shot put throwers in the state and his talents will most likely be on display Friday morning as well. Meinders comes into the Drake Relays with the eighth-best throw in the state. He’ll make his first throws at the Relays at around 8:30 a.m. Friday.

The final male athlete who could compete inside Drake Stadium is GMG’s Bryce Newcomb. The outstanding Wolverine senior has the 10th best mark in the long jump and will try to move up the ladder when he competes at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

The top 80 times in both the boys and girls 4x100 relay will be at the Drake Relays. The only boys team that fits into this category is West Marshall, which came into the meet with the 77th best time. They’ll run under the lights at 6:10 p.m. Friday.

GIRLS Another area athlete could be involved in multiple events at the Relays.

BCLUW’s Mallory Vawter will take the third best 100-meter hurdles time into the weekend and the Comet junior also will likely compete in the long jump as she sits with the 13th best mark.

The 100 hurdle premilinary heats will be at 8:16 a.m. Friday. The final for that event will be around noon later that day.

The girls high jump and the girls shot put could each have two area athletes competing against each other. South Hardin’s Sarah Boomgarden and GMG’s Caitlin Appelgate faced off against each other last year at the Drake Relays and the duo will likely face each other and the rest of the field Thursday afternoon. Boomgarden enters the weekend with the ninth best jump at 5-3 while Appelgate is tied for the 19th best jump at 5-2.

West Marshall’s Jennifer Davis got experience with the rinks at Drake Stadium last year and should easily be back at this year as she is sitting eighth in the shot put. The other area athlete who could be in the event is South Tam County’s Samantha Holtz. Holtz comes into the weekend with the 24th and final mark. The girls shot put will take place at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

Both Marshalltown and BCLUW have good enough times to compete in the field of 80 teams in the 4x100. The Bobcats are currently sitting 66th, while the Comets are 72nd. They will compete under the lights at 5:10 p.m. Friday.
