Citizen police academy graduate thankful

May 22, 2014 - Brett Van Waus
For the last 10 weeks myself and dozens of other Marshalltown residents participated in the Marshalltown Citizen’s Police Academy. It was like a real-life Discovery Channel show and I loved it. In these three hour courses, one day a week, we met several different staff members from various areas of the police department. They gave us lectures about what they do and assisted us in hands-on activities. One day Sgt. Roupp and officer Siemens came in and told us all about the K9s and we met Raji. I’ll never forget when Siemens showed us Raji in action— he bit a training sleeve on Capt. Jones’s arm. The last class was my favorite. I drove a Charger through cones. I wanted to zip through them like the police, but honestly, I could barely see over the wheel. That day we also shot guns, it was not how I imagined it would be— like something from a movie. It was much harder, powerful and scarier. It surprisingly had a kick. After taking the course we are now capable of volunteering with the police department. I am excited to get more involved with the community in this way. My overall experience was wonderful. I learned so much, met a lot of really awesome people and did things I never thought I would do. I recommend the Citizen’s Police Academy to anyone wanting to learn about the police department and their community. It’s a wonderful program the city offers.
