A breath of fresh air

June 26, 2014 - Brett Van Waus
I took a break from covering city meetings and crime. I regret not wearing my Nike Free sneakers as I walked with city leaders down a part of the Iowa River Rail Trail corridor during the VIP Sneak Peak Wednesday night. In Thursday’s Times-Republican I wrote about what others thought of the trail. For my blog this week I think it’s only right to share my opinion— wow. Val Ruff, a board member of TRAILS Inc., guided me along the rocks on the corridor of what seemed to be somewhere other than the city limits it resides in. It was a great day for a walk. It was sunny and the canopy of trees gave us plenty of shade on our journey. Ruff pointed out wild raspberries growing along the corridor and other types of plants growing. The little raspberries amazed me the most. There are so many things going for this trail, it’s really exciting. I think the city has a lot to look forward to in the coming months when the 37-mile corridor will be open to the public. Terry Briggs, of TRAILS Inc., said another sneak peak will possibly coincide with Oktemberfest and it will be open to the public. I can’t wait to get out there again.
