National Just Because Day

August 27, 2014 - Pam Rodgers

Wednesday is National Just Because Day.

What an interesting concept this day is — doing something for others “just because.” It’s certainly not a new one. The website, nationaldaycalendar.com, suggests you take a vacation, pay for someone else’s meal, give someone flowers, etc. According to the website, you should do something “different, out of the ordinary, something that you do not have to do but just want to do as that is what today is all about.”

I was not aware of this designation until a random Google search lead me to this web page. In case you didn’t know, every day is designated for something, even if it’s not as big as other nationally celebrated days. Whether you acknowledge it or not, every day is special. Doing things for others “just because” shouldn’t be a one day of the year action. It should be a consideration always, but it’s nice to have the reminder.

Now, if you’re interested, you can find out just how many designations there are per day. For instance, Wednesday is also National Pots De Creme Day, Global Forgiveness Day, “The Duchess” Who Wasn’t Day and National Banana Lovers Day.

So after you do something “just because,” make some custard, forgive anyone who has wronged you, Google Margaret Wolfe Hungerford to understand who “The Duchess” Who Wasn’t is/was and go eat a banana. Whether you do any of this or not, just remember to celebrate something today and every day after that.
