Never in my wildest dreams

December 15, 2009 - Pam Rodgers

I have mentioned briefly in a previous blog of my fear for anything that seemed remotely scary when I was younger. I have to say...I didn’t overcome this very quickly. I still had problems watching horror movies when I was in college. Trying Twilight last year was a step in the right direction to try other things in the horror genre. Now, the Twilight Saga is very mild in the horror category. In fact, I don’t consider it a horror movie at all.
Even though I am slowly starting to change, I still don’t see myself watching movies where some psychopath goes around murdering innocent people. I don’t like the premise, and it creeps me out big time. But give me a vampire movie and I’ll try it...ok I know it doesn’t make much sense. I guess it’s the fact that vampires are truly fictitious but some human who snaps and murders people can actually happen is the reason that it is scarier to me.
In all this babbling, I do have a point. I recently tried the Underworld movies and found I quite enjoyed them. I wouldn’t call them my favorite movies of all time but I did like watching them. It had a lot of action, a fairly decent plot line, a love story (a must for me) and gore (the last I’m not so keen on but it’s a must in the true horror films). I would recommend them for people willing to watch a horror film.
I guess the naivety of youth is finally wearing off, and I can separate what I see on the screen from what is actually possible in the real world. I can use it as an escape to see what life may be like if these creatures were real. I am slowly beginning to appreciate the untried category of movies and, at a similar speed, am finding enjoyment from them. I don’t know what I will try next but at least now I am willing to give some horror movies a chance.
As an aside, I still read murder mysteries with people killing other people but I guess seeing it done and reading it are completely different in my brain. I don't know how to explain it. I guess I'm just a visual person.
