Third time’s a charm?

North Tama twins Blaire, left, and Brooke Dinsdale lead the 1,500-meter run at Saturday’s Class 1A regional meet hosted by BGM High School in Brooklyn. The Dinsdales finished 1-2 in the event to help lead the Redhawks to 13 qualifiers for next week’s state meet in Des Moines.
BROOKLYN — The win-or-go home addage that postseason sports are often saddled with did not hold up at Saturday’s Class 1A regional track and field meet at BGM High School.
Instead it was win-or-go home and wait, and that was a satisfactory solution for a number of area athletes.
With two-time defending girls’ state team champion North Tama hoarding nine of 19 event titles, automatic advancement to next week’s Iowa High School State Track and Field Championships was hard to come by.
But the runner-ups were not left out in the cold. Four area teams collected 13 at-large bids, qualifying on time standard for the May 15-17 co-ed state track meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
North Tama made its intent clear, sending 13 total entries in hopes of a three-peat in the 1A field. It would be the first such accomplishment since Sigourney won the small-class title from 1990-92.
