Let there be peace

December 23, 2008
Times-Republican

A phrase we often hear this time of year is one wishing all "peace on earth."

We couldn't agree more.

With all the turmoil plaguing our world today - from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to the political "wars" between presidential candidates on our own soil - we can't help but think that the wish for peace on earth is especially fitting this year.

A 1955 carol by Jill Jackson and Sy Miller conveys that wish, but also reminds how peace on earth begins: not in Iraq or Afghanistan or in any political presidential campaign. Instead, peace begins with each of us - through our words, actions and prayers.

Yes, let there be peace on earth this Christmas.

Let there be peace on earth,

and let it begin with me.

Let there be peace on Earth,

the peace that was meant to be.

With God as our Father,

brothers all are we,

Let me walk with my brother,

in perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me,

let this be the moment now.

With every step I take,

let this be my solemn vow,

To take each moment and live each moment

in peace, eternally.

Let there be Peace on Earth,

and let it begin with me.
