Staying vigilant in the face of H1N1

POSTED: August 21, 2009

When Marshall County was hit with the H1N1 virus this spring and quickly set the state's record number of cases, local officials jumped into action for the protection of our community.

Now that school has begun, the Marshalltown Community School District and other community leaders are taking a smart, proactive role in regard to the deadly virus.

Recently such leaders met to discuss plans to handle a possible H1N1 outbreak this fall. The group examined the response to the May outbreak and reviewed what went well and what improvements could be implemented.

Meanwhile, our school district is taking measures to ensure the safety of children. By working closely with the Iowa Department of Public Health and Marshall County Public Health, the district will monitor flu conditions and make effective decisions at our schools.

Additionally, the district is preparing information to be sent home to each family to serve as a reminder about H1N1. The letters will include simple preventive measures and signs and symptoms of the flu. School officials are also encouraging families to make a contingency plans, should their children become ill.

Marshall County has experienced 56 confirmed cases of H1N1, compared to 200 cases statewide.

Taking precautions against the possible return of H1N1 is admirable. The leaders at the forefront of this endeavor should be commended for their efforts.

I like how you think Puppet but I think there is more to this than the government. What does the government get out of people fearing the flu? It's the health care industry that benefits. They are the manipulators of everything because the government has done so little to control them. They are the beast that will kill us all. Not some flu.

Pain and fear are the two greatest teachers/manipulators on the planet. Religion used fear for years to control the "faithful" while they exercised zero restraint when it came to matters of moral purity. Our government uses the same tactics. They use our fears to manipulate us into compliance with rules and regulations no one would follow without "pre-existing conditions". And wouldnt you know that there are always evil men just around the corner preparing to do "evil". So you better not pout, you better not cry, you better not shout, Uncle Sam is telling you why, H1N1 is coming to town, H1N1 is coming to town, H1N1 is coming... to... town.

Go Man Go!!!! This is such a ridiculous scare tactic that it makes me wonder who is making the money from this endeavor. Cover your mouth when you cough and sneeze, wash your hands often, don't go to events where there are lots of people(unless you have to), and just use common sense as to the spread of germs. Flu is flu is flu. Some will die, yes, as they have in the past with all flus, but don't let the government dictate to you that you MUST get a shot of virus to protect you from a virus!? These vaccines are not safe yet and they are hurring to make them available and are putting safety on the back burner. Themerosol, Squaline(sp) and other additives are detrimental to your health. If they can positively guarantee that there are no additives that are harmful to your health in the vaccine then proceed with caution. PLEASE!!! Its your body and your CHOICE!!!!!! Do the research, the information is out there. Look it up.

We all need to keep vigilant regardless of the pork flu or not! Such a big hype. This reminds of the "bird flu" that was to be a pandemic. What ever happened to it? Other types of flu are out there too, yet no one reports on it. Why is that? BAH!!
