Assault on record books now at state level for Carlson

The receiving records for Marshalltown High School football are nearly a monopoly by one name - Jarred Carlson.

Be it single game, single season or career, the 6-foot-3, 177-pound Bobcat senior has been breaking records left and right.

That will happen when you have season numbers of 63 catches for 1,115 yards and 17 touchdowns - all MHS records - going into tonight's Class 4A first-round playoff game between Marshalltown (10-0) and Waukee (7-3) at Leonard Cole Field.

Now Carlson's numbers are approaching state records.

The biggest of what have been a season of monster games for Carlson came in Wednesday's substate matchup against Indianola. Carlson hauled in 14 passes for 200 yards and four touchdowns. It was a mix of deep patterns and short routes, but it all ended the same with Carlson eluding defenders all night long.

"He had a huge night," said Marshalltown head coach Dave Holdiman. "We just played very well, you rush for 171 (yards) as a team and throw for 361, you've had a big night."

Indianola left Carlson uncovered at times, and a staple of the offense is to throw it to uncovered receivers.

"He got an extra four or five receptions with that simple throw being the uncovered guy," Holdiman said. "He's someone that can do a lot with it after the catch and that led to some big plays for us."

Quarterback Chanse Creekmur getting the ball to Carlson in the open field has led to plenty of success.

"I think it's just catching it, knowing where the defenders are and knowing which way to turn," Carlson said of gaining yards after the catch. "Then use spin moves and and stiff arms to get out of tackles. Once you catch the ball, you only have one or two guys to beat."

Carlson currently is tied for the Class 4A single-season record with his 17 touchdown receptions. His 1,115 receiving yards trail only current Iowa Hawkeye Keenan Davis' 1,160 in 2007 at Cedar Rapids Washington and former Mason City great Cody Huisman (1,141) in 4A history.

The only player in 4A history with more career receptions and touchdowns coming into the year than Carlson (112 catches and 21 scores) also is Davis with 169 and 26.

All the big plays have the MHS offense scoring 33.1 points per game.

"We have a good offensive line this year and they give Chanse protection," Carlson said. "All our of receivers are good so it's hard to cover four good guys. Whoever is open Chanse does a good job of getting them the ball and it's tough to stop us."
