Grateful for granddaughter
Jerry Waterman, MarshalltownWe have a granddaughter that is thankful to be alive. When she was about 2, she stopped eating and no one knew why. Today, it is difficult to keep her quiet but back then, Brianna had not learned to express herself with words so there was little communication there. It appeared that she just had some flu "thingy," something that was not easily detectable. For days she just lay around the house on her grandmother's lap, or just by herself. Trips to the doctor failed to find any abnormal ailment. It never got any better but there were periods of relief. For reasons unknown to me the grandmother suspected a ruptured appendix. I am fuzzy about what lead to the dash to Des Moines and the hospital but they rushed her right into the operating room. The grandmother was right, the appendix had burst and she had been suffering those many days with the infection in her body. We thank God for her today but there is one memory that stands out. We adults know how important it is to get the patient up and moving; this helps to keep pneumonia away - but how do you tell that to a two year old? All she knew was the pain in her body and these adults were forcing her to walk. I can still hear her plaintive cry, "why you killin me?" She repeated that childish statement over and over -it broke my heart. But the therapy of that moment was better than an onslaught of pneumonic disease. So the walks continued with her speaking her displeasure. Brianna's brush with death made me realize how similar humans act to the therapy that God provides. He often interferes in our life to get us to move out of the way of danger. He provides to us the truth that will heal our spirits and keep diseases from destroying any future we have. It is interesting to watch grown adults say the same to God. "Why are you "killing me" with all your rules and regulations?" Just let me alone! They never suspect that Adam's rebellion has already come into their life and is festering to the point of destroying them. God must try to save us before our death; there is no saving on the other side of life. Let God heal any rebellion that is in our lives.
