Election results in county reveal good competition
By KEN BLACK, TIMES-REPUBLICANLocal city elections saw some competitive races, especially in a couple of towns where the mayor's race was up for grabs.
Winning in State Center was Harlan Quick with 57 percent of the vote. He tallied 209 votes compared to challenger Jake Osgood's 152 votes.
"Let's say the nervousness is finally over," Quick said after his victory.
The mayor-elect served on the city council for eight years and said he still has some goals he wants to pursue, including economic development initiatives, having a more responsive local government, and making State Center a railroad quiet zone.
In LeGrand, another mayor's race was decided by a margin of 56 percent to 41 percent. Loran Vis won with 99 votes, compared to 73 votes for challenger Brad Weitzell. There were also five write-ins.
Vis was recovering from surgery and unavailable for comment Tuesday evening.
In other elections, Gary Larson was re-elected as Albion mayor. He ran unopposed.
Elected to the Albion City Council were Lynne Borton, Patrick Hemming, Gordon Lupkes, Jared McRill and Ben Veren.
John C. Mackin will serve as the mayor in Clemons after running unopposed. Winning spots on the city council in Clemons are Donald Davis, Shirley Davis, Marlene Krough, Pam Pritchett and Christine Salek.
Dale Thompson, who ran unopposed, was elected mayor of Ferguson.
Elected to Ferguson City Council were Betty Fuller, Brad Fuller, Michael Good, Doug McKay and Glenda Thompson.
In the Gilman City Council race, Sheila Beach and Marilyn Patterson won seats. Les Meyers also won a seat to fill a vacancy.
In Haverhill, Julie Coleman and Toby Nicholson each won a seat on the city council.
In the Laurel City Council race, there were three open seats. Harold Flohrs received 39 votes, Carolyn Vavra received 38 votes, James Happe received 27 and Josie Eggers tallied 23. There were also 38 write-in votes, which have the potential to affect the results, though the status of those write-in votes was unavailable at press time.
In the LeGrand City Council race, Dustin Vis and Jay Wyatt each took seats.
Jerry McDonald won the Liscomb mayor's post, running unopposed. Jerry Sanderson and Hank Penner took the seats on the city council in Liscomb.
Stanley Randall was elected mayor in Melbourne, beating out Chad Woosley by 54 votes to 44 votes. Tom Eckhart and John White each won seats on the Melbourne City Council.
In Rhodes, Jerry Klosterman and Mike Gerhart each won seats on the council.
In St. Anthony, Bruce Arnold was elected mayor, running unopposed. City council seats went to Linda Arnold, Joi Benedict, Dennis Bryant, Duane Bryant and Galen Davis.
In the State Center City Council race, Steven Lively, Richard Postel and Mike Riemenschneider all won seats.
