Cedar Rapids Xavier had it, lost it and got it back at the right time.

Momentum swings are a big part of volleyball and the Saints were able to hold off Southeast Polk for a 25-22, 25-23, 24-26, 10-25, 15-10 victory in the Class 4A Region 4 final Tuesday at the Roundhouse.

Cedar Rapids Xavier advances to its first state tournament since 2004. The Saints will play against Ankeny in the Class 4A quarterfinals Nov. 11 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.

"We just had to stay with our game plan," said Xavier head coach Barb Brunow. "Try to stay consistent and try not to get caught up with the roller coaster that was happening to us. Stick to the basics and remember what we do."

Xavier (20-18) took the first two games that went down to the wire before the Rams (22-19) came storming back.

Game three was tied at 24-all and went to Southeast Polk after a kill by Hannah Gaulke followed by a Saint hitting error.

The Rams scored the first five points of game four and never looked back in a 25-10 victory.

Southeast Polk had Xavier in a 6-3 hole in the decisive fifth game before the Saints took over.

Junior outside hitter Tyler Sampson had a pair of both kills and aces as Xavier went on a spurt to win the game and match, 15-10.

Sampson had a monster night hitting for the Saints and finished with a match-high 16 kills and tied setter Shelby Woods with four aces.

"Tyler is one of our captains and one of our go-to players," Brunow said. "In those key moments you need someone to rise up and she did."

Moleigh Ryther added 10 kills for Xavier and Alex Saxen had seven.

Southeast Polk, which downed No. 8 Cedar Rapids Washington in the semifinals, ends the season with a 22-19 record.

Allison Barloon finished with 14 kills for the Rams. Sara Snead added nine kills, while Hollie Heffelginger and Gaulke had seven apiece. Brooke Spencer led Southeast Polk with three aces.
