Tiger basketball teams split in season openers
By TIMES-REPUBLICAN STAFFWEST BURLINGTON - Sophomore Shannon Lee scored a career-high 22 points as the Marshalltown Community College women's basketball team won its season opener 98-74 Friday against St. Louis Community College-Forest Park.
Four Tigers scored in double figures in the Fun City Classic matchup as Tracey Williams poured in 17 points, Kwinnyata Mercer had 13 and Claudia Silva 10.
Ralissa Nelson led MCC with 10 rebounds, while Nicole Royer had six. Mercer finished with team-highs in assists (eight) and steals (five).
The Tigers face St. Louis CC-Flo Valley today at 11 a.m. in the final day of Southeastern's tournament.
MCC men just short
WEST BURLINGTON - The Marshalltown men's basketball team pushed No. 6 Southwestern Illinois to the brink in their season-opening contest Friday night in the Fun City Classic, but came up just short, 75-73.
Southwestern's preseason All-American Kenny Leverette hit a jumper with 1.9 seconds left to play to give the Blue Storm the win.
Will Clyburn led the Tigers with 27 points on the night. Demarcus Phillips added 24 for MCC.
The Tigers will play St. Louis-Flo Valley today at 1 p.m. to continue tournament play.
