It's a special touch not every downtown has - and in its ninth year we can hardly imagine Main Street without them.
Marshalltown's Floral Basket Program, funded solely by local residents, businesses and service clubs is preparing for yearly placement.
At the head of this effort is Darrel Gaskill who founded the wildly successful program. Along with Gaskill, a number of volunteers will help place more than 3,000 petunias in the hanging containers that adorn Main Street and the Marshalltown Family Aquatic Center. Main Street will receive 100 baskets and 24 will be displayed at the aquatic center.
The plants have been ordered and will arrive at the local greenhouse in April. And now is the time to support the program's annual budget of $10,000 with financial backing.
We encourage all of us who enjoy the floral displays to help in the effort to fund them or perhaps volunteer in their placement.
We applaud Gaskill and the many volunteers who help beautify Marshalltown each year. We believe this is a tradition Marshalltown should continue and that each of us should do what we can to support it.
Checks may be sent to Marshalltown Floral Baskets, in care of Darrel Gaskill, 19A S. First St., Marshalltown, Iowa, 50158.
