Get your tickets. On Saturday the box office opens for a celebration our community can be proud of.
The Marshalltown High School/Community Auditorium will celebrate its 25 year anniversary with a Silver Anniversary Concert featuring world-renowned bass baritone Simon Estes on Oct. 23.
That's right - Simon Estes - Centerville native and international star.
And not only will Estes himself grace the stage, he will bring with him the Iowa State University Wind Ensemble and the Dallas Brass.
Now that's what we call a celebration. And the price is right - $10 per ticket.
Moreover, its a great reminder of the wonderful facility we have in Marshalltown. One that has hosted more than 680 community events and 1,800 school events through the years.
It's also a time to recognize the people who launched a community-wide effort to build the facility.
A bond issue to fund the facility failed three times from when it was initially visualized in 1962, however, with the help of the Marshalltown Assistance League in 1982, serious donations started pouring in. Martha Ellen Tye generously supported the effort and served as honorary chairperson of the Marshalltown Auditorium Foundation.
In the end, the project received approximately $1.5 million in donations at the time of dedication. Ultimately, the $2.9 million project was funded through public and private support from the Marshalltown Community School District and the Marshalltown community.
Marshalltown should be proud of this effort, and to have such an auditorium in our community.
The celebration extends to Oct. 24 when the auditorium will host an open house at 2 p.m. featuring performances by MHS students.
But to see legendary Simon Estes, get your tickets while they are hot. For more information contact the Auditorium Box Office at 754-1141. Tickets will only be available at the box office.
