Marshalltown needs Lennox

February 12, 2011
Times-Republican

It's apparent that these are uncertain times. They are for many of us. But for Marshalltown, the strain of a union contract negotiation has made us pause.

Lennox Industries and the United Auto Workers union opened formal contract negotiations in October of last year.

An agreement has not been met, and further, the company has filed an unfair labor practice charge against the union.

The result is a community left wondering. Will they reach an agreement? What happens next?

Lennox Industries has deep roots in Marshalltown, having been established in the community more than 100 years ago.

Today, it employs 1,200 of some of our hardest working community members.

We don't pretend to know the answers.

There is without a doubt, two sides of the story here. We empathize for the laborers, who want fair wages and benefits, as well as the employer, watching the bottom line in a volatile business climate.

It's our hope that both parties can arrive at a mutual agreement. Our community is counting on it.
