Residents told the leave Newton apartment building

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Residents of a Newton apartment building have been told to move out of their homes because the structure has been deemed an "unfit dwelling."

The Newton Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/1mKS11n ) residents of the three-story building found a sign posted Monday from the Newton Fire Department informing them they needed to vacate the building immediately. Residents learned the owner had 10 days to appeal the order.

Easy Keep Management oversees the building and stated that the only issue was a fire escape that was being repaired.

Newton Fire Chief Jarrod Wellik says there are other problems, but he wouldn't be specific.

There are 12 apartments in the building but it's unclear how many people live there.
