WELLMAN, Iowa (AP) — A former business manager for an eastern Iowa school district has been accused of stealing about $8,000 through an employee credit card.

The Mid-Prairie School District says Cindy Steege, of North Liberty, faces second-degree theft charges in connection to unauthorized charges on the card. Court records do not list an attorney.

Steege made a court appearance Wednesday in Washington County Court. She was released on her own recognizance.

School officials say they contacted authorities in late June after finding possible financial irregularities and conducting an internal investigation.

The Fairfield Ledger reports ( ) the state auditor's office is investigating the case, as well as Steege's involvement as a business manager for another school district.
