West Marshall and Iowa City Regina both have started the 2011 high school football season with back-to-back wins.
Both schools have defeated ranked teams on their way to 2-0, but it has been Regina's win last Friday night over Solon that has carried the most weight.
The Regals jumped ahead of West Marshall for the No. 1 ranking in Class 2A in the latest Associated Press Iowa high school football polls released on Monday.
Regina received 10 of the possible 15 votes, while No. 2 West Marshall was picked for the top spot by the remaining five voters. Last week the Trojans had eight first-place votes compared to seven for the Regals.
Last Friday night saw defending state champion Regina win its 16th consecutive game, a 35-9 win over Class 3A No. 2 Solon. Defending state champion Solon saw a 13-game winning streak snapped. The Regals also were the last team to defeat the Spartans as they ended a 42-game Solon winning streak in 2010.
West Marshall took out then-Class A No. 1 Madrid 58-0 in the season opener and followed with last week's 14-7 win at then-1A No. 4 Aplington-Parkersburg. A-P dropped to sixth this week.
Cedar Falls remains No. 1 in Class 4A after taking 14 of the 15 first-place votes. No. 3 West Des Moines Valley received a first-place vote and travels to Marshalltown on Friday. The Bobcats are receiving votes in the state rankings.
North Tama stayed at No. 3 in Class A this week after a 45-0 victory over HLV to win its 33rd straight regular season game.
District 4 members Gladbrook-Reinbeck and BCLUW are both vote-getters in 1A.
