Grundy Center spoils Royals’ Homecoming

COLO - Cody Cole had two second-quarter rushing touchdowns and Joel Rust threw for two fourth-quarter scores as Grundy Center won its Class A District 3 opener on Colo-NESCO's Homecoming night, 32-19, on Friday night.

Grundy Center (2-2, 1-0) held a 19-7 halftime lead but saw its advantage shortened to 19-13 when Colo-NESCO's Brandyn Niemeyer scored from 2 yards out late in the third quarter.

The Spartans responded by scoring on their first two possessions of the fourth period, with Rust connecting on an 8-yard pass with Riley Wells and a 4-yard pass to Jordan Clapp.

Garrett Eley's 1-yard TD plunge put the Royals (0-4, 0-1) on the scoreboard first after a 15-play, 70-yard drive, but Grundy Center answered 42 seconds later. Connor Noteboom blasted across the goal line from 5 yards out to tie it up.

Niemeyer added an 8-yard TD run with 18 seconds left to account for the final score.

Niemeyer finished with 22 runs for 85 yards while going 8-for-27 for 100 yards but three interceptions. Eley added 46 yards on the ground. Cameron Reischauer had two catches for a team-high 37 yards, while Eley had two grabs for 22 yards.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck 36, Ogden 14

OGDEN - Gladbrook-Reinbeck scored in every quarter to to keep its distance from Ogden in a 36-14 victory Friday night.

Ryan Strohbehn rushed 12 times for 94 yards and a score while Parker Bolt added 74 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Chase Clark also punched one in for six.

Bolt was 13-of-22 passing for 156 yards, hooking up with Brady Billerbeck and Cobren Bird for scores.

The Rebels (3-0, 1-0) rushed for 249 yards and outgained Ogden (2-2, 0-1) 405-177 on the night.
