ELKADER - The Class A No. 6-ranked North Tama football team will enter the postseason on a three-game winning streak after a huge night running by Nick Whannel to go with the Redhawks' usual shut-down defense.
Whannel had 11 carries for 146 yards and four touchdowns as North Tama was a 38-0 winner over Central Elkader on Friday. Whannel scored on runs of 6, 43, 23 and 20 yards.
The Redhawks (8-1, 5-1) notched their seventh shutout of the season and the 2010 state champions go into this year's playoffs allowing only 4.2 points per game - second-best in Iowa high school football.
Dalton Hulme added 51 rushing yards for North Tama and passed for 74 yards. Jacob Watson started the game's scoring with a 34-yard run in the second quarter and he also had a team-high four receptions for 40 yards.
Chris Droullard and Whannel both had eight total tackles. Jordan Mask finished with an interception, while Blade Bradley, Shane Lawton, Tyler Nelson and Brian Seda each had a fumble recovery.
North Tama hosts North Butler (5-4) in Wednesday's opening round of the state playoffs.
St. Edmond 49, South Hardin 7
ELDORA - Class 2A No. 9 St. Edmond closed the regular season strong as both Neil Flattery and Alex Mericle had over 130 rushing yards and two scores.
Flattery finished with 131 yards and four touchdowns for the Gaels (8-1, 6-1), while Mericle had 143 yards and two TDs.
Tyler Petersen rushed for a team-high 39 yards and a score for South Hardin (2-7, 1-6). Ben Ferris and Dayton Balvanz both had four receptions. Andrew Stowe paced the defense with 17 total tackles.
North Butler 49, Colo-NESCO 7
GREENE - North Butler captured its first winning regular season as a program with its district victory over the Royals on Friday.
Rob Rottler rushed for three touchdowns and caught a scoring pass for the Bearcats (5-4, 3-2).
Garrett Eley finished with 108 rushing yards and had a third-quarter touchdown for the Royals (1-8, 1-4).
Garner-Hayfield 54, AGWSR 0
GARNER - Garner-Hayfield standout running back Alex Van Gerpen finished with seven carries for 202 yards and four touchdowns on Friday.
The hosts also received four scores on passes from quarterback Jace Engstler to wideout Joe Ermer.
AGWSR finishes 1-8 overall and 0-7 in the district.
