We need a radical change

November 18, 2011
Darrell V. Mitchell, Marshalltown , Times-Republican

I believe the 1 percent of wealthy persons living in America, need to make some radical changes if we are going to survive as a nation.

The one percent control 23.5 percent of our nation's wealth. We have

$15 trillion of indebtedness in our country and most of it is due to our 60 years of war involvement.

Did you know that 21,000 Americans are millionaires off of our war industry? Again, the 1 percent of our country's wealthy spend $60 million to lobby for their rights of their war industry. We are bankrupting ourselves, like drug addicts, we can't surrender our drug habit in being violent. We keep supplying 150 military bases around the world. Did you know that we give Israel $3 billion dollars each year, which amounts to $8.2 million dollars every day? Israel is one of the thirteenth wealthiest countries in the world. Why do we need to be giving them that kind of money, when we are having more Americans fall into poverty and there are nearly 50,000,000 Americans who need healthcare? We need to stop sending Israel that kind of money, when they continue to break international law, and makes us Americans look bad to the rest of the world. Listen to Martin Luther King, Jr. who has this to say to us, "The moral arc of the universe is long, but it bends toward justice." And Again he says to us, "The salvation of our nation and the salvation of mankind (humankind), we must follow another way." Let us get our priorities right and bring peace and justice in our world. The Occupy Wall Street people are telling us something and we better listen to their demands. God help us during these troubled days.
