Marshalltown police warn of bogus phone solicitations

The Marshalltown Police Department has received a series of complaints regarding the theft of money through PayPal, a business allowing payments and money transfers through the Internet.

In both instances "Dish Network" television customers were contacted by phone by subjects identifying themselves as "Dish Network" sales representatives. The victims were told they could receive an entire year of "Dish Network" services for $300. The representative then requests that the victim obtain a PayPal Green Dot Money Pak Card from a local retailer and call back with the card's payment information. Once the payment information is given to the representative and the money is transferred from the payment card, no service is provided.

The Marshalltown Police Department would like to warn citizens about possible telephone scams. If you received an unsolicited call from a product or service provider, our department recommends locating an independent phone number for the organization from either a Yellow Page listing or company internet website and calling the company to verify the advertised product or service.

If you believe that you have been fraudulently solicited, please contact the police department to report the incident.
