Thoughts for thought

December 19, 2011
Don Plahn, Marshalltown , Times-Republican

1. President Obama inherited a bad economy from President Bush. Right? OK! As with many inheritances, President Obama didn't have the foggiest idea what to do with his. He just didn't understand or comprehend that when a "credit card" is maxed-out, you don't raise the credit limit so you can spend more money, even if it isn't yours. You cannot spend other people's money to achieve prosperity. You cannot make a poor man rich by making a rich man poor. (I read this someplace) We need jobs - in this country.

2. For all the people that have had a period of time when Social Security was not deducted from their wages or the amount was reduced and if President Obama gets that extended, just remember when you are ready to retire and collect on your Social Security, you will be a couple of years short on contributions. The amount you will be paid will be less because of your reduced contributions. What a false economy. There is no free lunch. Your getting what you voted for.

3. For all the "baggage" that can be found on all the present candidates for president - just remember if Senator Jack Kennedy's escapades and indiscretions had been known, you would have voted for him anyway so he could continue to do them in the White House. Right? So why does anyone's "baggage" bother you now? It's the economy! Act accordingly! You will get what you vote for.

4. In this economy, why should state employees get a free ride on their health insurance - paid by us. The Legislature should strike a bargain on Collective Bargaining and have them pay their fair share like the rest of us do. Call you representative to get them to do the fair thing.
