A community asset at MHS

December 20, 2011
Foster Hawkins, Marshalltown , Times-Republican

I would like to make you aware of a wonderful community asset: The orchestra program at MHS. Last Tuesday night, we were treated to a wonderful Christmas program at the high school auditorium. Beyond the traditional orchestral and Christmas music, there were mariachi songs and the world premier of a local composer's latest work. Area adult musicians also donated their time and talents to enhancing the program by joining the students.

These programs are a wonderful example of the talent in the school system being cultivated by Mrs. Megan Stucky, the orchestra director. Starting with the first year orchestra students in fifth grade, graduating to the accomplished, polished sounds of the MHS Orchestra, the entire program was wonderful.

We hear many conflicting descriptions of the high school but these programs showcase the positive. Hard work, practice, self-discipline and nurturing are the lessons learned and shared. Please make time next spring to experience the orchestra at MHS - it will be well worth your time
