Christmas Bird Count a success

January 2, 2012
Mark Proescholdt, Liscomb

The Eldora-Union Christmas Bird Count took place on Dec. 21. Eight birders including Garnita Seward, of rural Eldora, explored areas in our count circle that included Pine Lake State Park, Reece County Park near New Providence, Grammer Grove County Park near Liscomb and the towns of Eldora, New Providence, Union, Whitten and Liscomb. Winnifred Crosley, of Eldora, was a feeder watcher.

Thirty-eight species of birds were seen and 3,002 birds were counted. Among the birds seen were 21 Bald Eagles, three Pileated Woodpeckers, three Northern Shrikes and 1,800 Canada and cackling geese.

Seward and Ramona Sommerlot, of rural Union, started this Christmas Bird Count in 1978 and it has taken place every year since except once due to bad weather.
