A family made it safely out of their home Tuesday night when a garage fire broke out at about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday night at 10 S. Third Street, the Marshalltown Fire Department reported Wednesday morning.
Upon arrival the garage was fully involved and the southeast corner of the house was partially involved. The garage fire was extinguished, however fire extended into the roof of the home.
Fire Chief Steve Edwards said the cause is under investigation, and the house was likely not a complete loss.
Siding was melted on the house at 207 1/2 W. Church St. A garage at 209 W. Church had moderate fire damage. Crews were on scene for approximately four hours.
The Marshalltown Fire Department was assisted by Marshalltown Area Paramedic Service and MPD.
The nearby House of Compassion shelter is without power after a power line was damaged in the fire and the office and supply closet at the facility is closed Wednesday. Director Jean Bergen hopes to have the serving of the 5 p.m. supper Wednesday as Alliant Energy crews expect power to be back on sometime Wednesday afternoon.
